Jahida Akter Jui: A Young Student Holding Onto Her Dream of Becoming a Doctor

Alingan Foundation works to support children from underprivileged communities in Bangladesh by helping them continue their education and creating opportunities for a brighter future. Through education sponsorship and community-based support, Alingan aims to help children pursue their dreams with dignity, hope, and determination.

One of these children is Jahida Akter Jui, a Class Five student at Palli Bondhu Ershad School. Born on 12 November 2013, Jui lives with her family in Korail, Dhaka. Her family came to Dhaka from Sherpur about 20 years ago in search of a better life.

Today, Jui lives with her family in a narrow tin-roofed room. The living space is small, and the family shares essential amenities with neighboring households. More than seven family members live together, including Jui, her parents, her elder brother Jahid, and her younger sister Joba.

Jui’s father, Md Jakir Sarkar, works as a rickshaw driver. He works from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and earns around BDT 12,000 per month. Her mother, Mrs. Taslima, works as a home worker from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and earns approximately BDT 7,000 per month.

Together, Jui’s parents earn around BDT 19,000 per month, equivalent to approximately USD 154 or EUR 136 at the October 1, 2026 exchange rates. For a family of more than seven people, this income has to cover daily household needs as well as the educational expenses of the children. Financial hardship therefore remains one of the family’s main challenges, although there are no major medical problems reported.

Despite these circumstances, Jui’s parents continue to believe in the value of education. They want their children to have better opportunities in life, and they believe education can help Jui move toward the future she dreams of. Their decision to keep their children in school reflects their hope that education can open doors that may otherwise remain out of reach.

For Jui, studying is more than a daily responsibility. She enjoys learning and dreams of becoming a doctor. Outside her studies, she enjoys reading books, singing, and dancing. She also dislikes fighting and prefers a peaceful environment.

Her dream is ambitious, but her determination is visible in the way she continues her education despite the financial limitations surrounding her family. Her parents are also making their own efforts every day, working to provide for the family while supporting their children’s studies.

Jui’s story reminds us that a child’s future can begin with something as simple and powerful as the opportunity to stay in school. When children are given consistent support, they have a better chance to continue learning, develop their abilities, and work toward the dreams they carry.

Jui is still at the beginning of her journey. She has many years of education ahead of her, and her dream of becoming a doctor will require continued dedication and opportunity.

In the heart of Korail slum in Dhaka, around 80-year-old Shurva Begum lives a quiet life shaped by uncertainty, dependence, and the everyday struggle to meet basic needs.

Although she has children, Shurva says that she does not receive regular care from them. As a result, she depends largely on the kindness and support of people around her to get through each day. Even the rent for her small home is something she has to manage herself.

For an elderly person, managing food, housing, and daily necessities can become increasingly difficult when there is no dependable source of income or regular family support.

Living with the Help of a Community

Shurva’s life in Korail reflects a reality that often remains unseen in a busy city like Dhaka.

Her neighbors sometimes help her by providing food. These may seem like small acts of kindness, but for Shurva, they can make an important difference in her daily life.

Having food available, however, does not always mean having the freedom to choose what she would like to eat or what might be better for her needs. When someone depends on others for basic necessities, even simple everyday choices can become difficult.

At an age when people often need greater care and security, living without consistent family support can make ordinary challenges much harder.

More Than a Story About Poverty

Shurva’s story is not simply about financial hardship.

It is also a story about aging, dignity, dependence, and community support.

Her experience raises an important question about what happens to elderly people who do not have reliable support from their families. Who helps them when they need food? settlements when her own children turn away from her? In the heart of Dhaka, the
Korail slum elderly struggle represents a stark, unvarnished reality of urban
poverty. Here, old age brings neither rest nor security, but rather a grueling,
day-to-day battle for basic existence.

At Alingan Dhaka, our documentary work aims to look beyond the surface of the
city’s glittering skylines and document the lives of those who live in the
shadows. This is the story of Ayesha Begum and little Sadya-a testament to human
endurance, quiet dignity, and the urgent need for collective humanitarian
responsibility.

Inside the Windowless Room: Ayesha Begum’s Daily Battle

Ayesha Begum is nearly eighty years old. In a phase of life where she should be
surrounded by care and comfort, she finds herself entirely on her own. With her
children unable or unwilling to support her, survival has become a daily
imposition.

Ayesha lives in a cramped, windowless tin-shed room tucked deep inside
Korail—one of Dhaka’s largest informal settlements. It is a space where natural
daylight cannot pierce through the corrugated iron walls. From cooking her own
meals on a rudimentary stove to managing her physical needs despite failing
health, Ayesha does everything independently. Every single day is an exercise in
survival against overwhelming odds.

An Unlikely Bond: Protecting Little Sadya

Ayesha’s story does not end with her own hardship; it carries an even deeper
layer of emotional weight. Living with her is Sadya, a young girl who lost her
mother four years ago. Left without maternal protection or a stable home, Sadya
found a safe haven in Ayesha Begum.

Despite her advanced age, extreme poverty, and failing strength, Ayesha took
upon herself the responsibility of raising and caring for the orphaned child.
Together, they share a tiny, enclosed space defined by mutual reliance. Yet,
this bond exposes a profound vulnerability. Without financial stability, proper
nutrition, or a secure roof over their heads, their daily existence hangs by a
thread.

The Crushing Weight of Urban Poverty

Life in Korail slum is defined by continuous deprivation. For Ayesha and Sadya,
paying rent and securing decent, nutritious meals are perpetual uncertainties.
The physical toll of the environment combined with extreme economic hardship
makes every single week a crisis.

Yet, amidst this acute poverty, Ayesha continues to nurture Sadya, showcasing an
extraordinary human spirit. But resilience alone cannot pay for rent or
medicine. Stories like this remind us that urban poverty is not just a
statistic—it is a human crisis that demands our attention and empathy.

The Silent Struggle of Two Orphan Brothers Fighting for Dignity

Inside the narrow, labyrinthine alleys of Korail Slum-Dhaka’s largest informal settlement-the summer heat turns low tin roofs into stifling ovens. In a cramped, dimly lit room near the Al-Madina Mosque, twenty-six-year-old Jahidul Islam lies motionless on a thin mattress on the floor.

Jahid cannot walk. He cannot feed himself, speak, or sit up without assistance. Born with severe, congenital physical and speech disabilities, his world has been confined to the perimeter of a bed and a floor for over a quarter of a century.

Beside him sits his younger brother, Maksudul Islam. At an age when young men strive to build a future for their own fledgling families, Maksudul carries a burden few could ever imagine: becoming the sole caregiver, voice, and lifeline for a brother the world has largely forgotten.

A Childhood Stolen by Loss and Adversity

Tragedy is not new to Jahid and Maksudul. Their father, who was also physically disabled and begged to survive, passed away years ago. In December 2016, their mother lost her prolonged battle with cancer, leaving the brothers orphaned in the unforgiving heart of the city.

In their darkest hour, their maternal aunt (Khala) stepped in. Supporting the family through a modest betel leaf (paan) stall in Motijheel, she took Jahid into her own home, bathing him, feeding him, and protecting him with maternal devotion.

For years, her sacrifice kept the brothers afloat. But recently, cruel fate struck once more.

Their aunt was diagnosed with advanced cancer—the exact illness that claimed their mother. Weakened and bedridden, she now spends her days shuttling between public hospital wards for treatment. With the only guardian incapacitated, the fragile sanctuary holding Jahid’s life together completely collapsed.

A Brother’s Ultimate Sacrifice

Hearing of his aunt’s critical illness, Maksudul immediately rushed back to Korail to take over his brother’s care.

Taking care of Jahid is an around-the-clock commitment. Because Jahid cannot speak, he cannot communicate when he is hungry, thirsty, or in pain. If left alone, he will remain unfed and untended for days. His stiffened limbs frequently contract into painful spasms that require daily manual massages, yet professional physiotherapy and medical care remain out of reach.

For Maksudul, who has a wife and a young son dependent on him, every single day presents an agonizing moral dilemma:

“If I go out to drive or earn a living, who feeds my brother? Who changes him? But if I stay inside this room to care for him, how will I pay for our rent, our food, and my child’s future?”

Because Jahid is completely incontinent and requires adult care, Maksudul cannot simply leave him with neighbors or expect his wife to manage the heavy physical burden alone.

Threat of Eviction: When Slum Realities Turn Cruel

Compounding their desperate situation is an immediate eviction notice. The dilapidated tin shanty where they currently live is scheduled for demolition and reconstruction.

In informal urban settlements, families with severely disabled members face deep-seated social stigma. Landlords are reluctant to rent rooms to someone in Jahid’s condition, fearing the mess and the burden. With no ancestral land, no permanent address, and no savings, the brothers face the terrifying prospect of homelessness on the streets of Dhaka.

Alingan’s Ground Visit: A Plea to Humanity

The team from Alingan Foundation recently visited Jahid and Maksudul’s tiny room, witnessing firsthand the reality of their quiet endurance. While emergency nourishment—including fortified milk powder—was delivered on the spot, temporary relief cannot solve a systemic humanitarian crisis.

Jahid does not just need food for today; he and his brother need a dignified, stable room, accessible hygiene facilities, continuous medical relief, and a sustainable livelihood solution that allows Maksudul to earn without leaving his disabled brother in danger.

His parents divorced after his birth, and his father has not been involved in caring for him since then. In the absence of parental support, Rafi has grown up under the wing of his grandparents.

He dreams of becoming successful in the future and wants to build a better life for himself. His journey reminds us that children growing up in these environments need more than just classrooms. They need family support, safe environments, regular opportunities to learn, and people who believe in their potential.

Fatema’s Interrupted Dreams: Illness, Poverty, and the Fight for Her Future

In the crowded lanes of Karail Slum, many children grow up dreaming of a better future through education. For 15-year-old Fatema, that dream was simple: continue her studies, complete her education, and one day build a better life for herself and her family.

Fatema was a Class 8 student. Like many other children, she wanted to attend school regularly and focus on her studies. But living in Karail Slum makes continuing education difficult for many families, where financial hardship often creates barriers to a child’s education.

Fatema is one of four sisters. None of them had many opportunities to pursue higher levels of education. Despite these challenges, Fatema wanted to continue studying and achieve something meaningful in the future.

Then, everything changed.

Fatema was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Her family tried different forms of treatment in the hope that she would recover. They did everything within their ability, but unfortunately, Fatema has not been able to regain her health.

Her condition requires advanced medical treatment, but advanced treatment comes with a cost that her family simply cannot afford.

For a family already struggling with financial limitations, the cost of serious medical treatment can feel impossible. The family is now facing a painful situation where Fatema’s health and future depend not only on medical care, but also on whether they can receive the financial support needed to access that care.

Fatema’s story is not only about illness.

It is about a young girl whose education was interrupted just as she was beginning to imagine her future.

She had dreams.

She wanted to study.

She wanted to become something in life.

But today, those dreams are waiting while her family searches for a way to help her receive the treatment she needs.

A Child’s Dream Should Not End Because of Poverty

For children growing up in vulnerable communities, education can be one of the few paths toward a different future. Fatema understood the value of education and wanted to keep moving forward despite the challenges around her.

Her illness has now placed that journey on hold.

Behind the crowded lanes of Karail Slum, thousands of families wake up every morning hoping that today will be a little better than yesterday. Among them is the family of Yasin, whose story reflects the daily reality faced by many low-income families in one of Dhaka’s largest informal settlements.

Yasin lives with his parents in Karail Slum. His mother works as a domestic helper in different households, while his father earns a living by driving a rickshaw. Although both parents work tirelessly, their income is barely enough to cover food, rent, and other basic necessities.

The family’s situation became even more difficult when Yasin’s father developed a serious heart condition. Doctors recommended treatment, but the cost is beyond what the family can afford. Despite his illness, he continues to pull a rickshaw because stopping work would leave the family without a stable source of income.

Every day brings difficult choices. Should the little money they earn be spent on medicine, food, rent, or their children’s education? These impossible decisions are part of everyday life for many families living in poverty.

Yet, even in these circumstances, Yasin’s parents continue to believe that education is the path toward a better future. They dream of seeing their children complete their studies and build a life filled with opportunities they never had themselves.

This story is not simply about poverty. It is about resilience, dignity, responsibility, and the determination of a family that refuses to give up despite overwhelming challenges. It reminds us that behind every statistic about urban poverty is a real family with hopes, dreams, and aspirations.
