Support Posted on Sat, December 27, 2025 12:56:09

The Korail slum fire documentary presents the heartbreaking yet powerful real-life stories of families who lost everything in one of the most devastating fires in Dhaka’s Korail slum. Within minutes, homes, livelihoods, and lifelong memories were reduced to ashes. This blog post documents those realities with dignity, respect, and transparency, highlighting both loss and resilience.

The Korail Slum Fire: What Happened?

Korail is one of the largest informal settlements in Dhaka, home to thousands of underprivileged families. A sudden and massive fire swept through the slum, destroying more than 2,000 homes. Families had no time to save belongings, documents, or tools they depended on for survival.

The Korail slum fire left men, women, children, and elderly residents homeless overnight—forced to sleep under open skies with nothing but ashes where their homes once stood.

Five Families, Five Real Stories

This documentary focuses on five families supported by Alingan Foundation, each representing a different but equally painful reality.

1. Shahida – A Mother’s Silent Strength

Shahida is a mother raising a differently-abled daughter in Korail slum. Life was already difficult, but the fire destroyed her home completely. She lost all belongings, clothing, and memories in minutes. Despite unimaginable hardship, she continues to fight for her child’s future with dignity.

3. Mahfuza – An Elderly Woman Standing Alone

Mahfuza is an elderly resident of Korail slum living without family support. She had saved small amounts from her daily earnings, but the fire destroyed everything. Even after losing her shelter and savings, her courage and calm resilience remain deeply inspiring.

4. Families Who Lost Their Livelihoods

For many families, the fire didn’t just burn homes—it destroyed income sources. Sewing machines, tools, and work equipment were reduced to ashes. Without these, rebuilding life becomes even harder.

5. Rusia – A Life Built on Sewing

Rusia supported her family by sewing clothes, while her husband sold garments and tea on the streets. The fire burned their house, sewing machine, and tea kettle—leaving the family completely helpless. Their story reflects the harsh reality faced by countless slum families after disasters.

Emergency Support from Alingan Foundation

In response to the crisis, Alingan Foundation stood beside the affected families by providing emergency cash support of 2,000 BDT per family. This immediate help offered temporary relief for food and basic needs.

However, rebuilding homes, livelihoods, and stability requires far more support. The foundation continues to raise awareness through transparent storytelling so that the voices of the most vulnerable are not ignored.

The Karail Slum Fire – The Devastating Story of Shahida and Her Disabled Daughter

Activities, Support, Uncategorised Posted on Thu, November 27, 2025 16:27:23

A massive fire recently broke out in the Karail slum in Dhaka, destroying over 2,000 homes in just minutes. Families already struggling with poverty suddenly lost everything.
Among these families is Shahida, a mother of a disabled daughter, whose heartbreaking story reflects the silent suffering of thousands.

🔥 The Night of the Fire: When Life Turned Into Ashes

It was early evening when flames erupted unexpectedly in the slum. Within moments, strong winds pushed the fire across rows of homes, leaving people no time to save their belongings.

Shahida had only one instinct —
“Save my daughter first.”

Amid chaos, crying children, and collapsing tin homes, she carried her disabled daughter to safety.
She couldn’t save a single item from her home.

The fire stole everything — except her hope to protect her child.

🔥 Aftermath: Life on a Pile of Ashes

When the flames finally stopped, the sight was unimaginable.
Blackened ruins. Burned utensils. Piles of melted belongings.
Families searching desperately for anything salvageable.

Shahida’s family lost:

  • Their house
  • Clothing
  • Everyday essentials
  • Food
  • Savings
  • Documents
  • Medicines

For a day-laborer family living in extreme poverty, this loss is not just physical — it pushes them to the edge of survival.

🔥 Raising a Disabled Child: Pain That Doubles in Crisis

Taking care of a disabled child in a slum environment is incredibly difficult.
After the fire, everything became harder:

  • No stable shelter
  • No safe place for the child
  • No bed or mattress
  • No cooking tools
  • No privacy
  • Increased emotional stress

Shahida now carries the burden of rebuilding while ensuring constant care for her daughter — a task that feels impossible without support.

🔥 A Mother’s Strength: Hope Against All Odds

Even after losing everything, Shahida refuses to give up.

She says:
“I have to stay strong for my daughter. As long as she is alive, I cannot break.”

Her resilience is a reminder that even in the darkest moments, love and hope still survive.

Alingan Foundation is dedicated to creating opportunities for underprivileged children in Bangladesh, ensuring every child has the chance to learn, grow, and dream. Through education sponsorship and storytelling, we aim to empower children to overcome adversity and build a brighter future.

Tanzina, 9, and her younger sister Farzana, 6, live with their family in Korail Slum, Dhaka. Their father, Md Bayjit Mia, works tirelessly as a rickshaw driver-the sole breadwinner for five children, including four sisters and one brother. Daily life is a struggle, and financial hardship makes it impossible for their elder siblings to continue education, while many opportunities remain out of reach for Tanzina and Farzana.

Despite these challenges: Tanzina and Farzana exhibit remarkable resilience and determination. Both sisters have a love for dancing, art, and singing, finding joy and hope in their creativity even amidst the difficulties of slum life. Tanzina dreams of becoming a doctor one day, and Farzana shares her sister’s aspirations to make a difference in the world. Their young minds already think beyond survival-they dream of helping others and building a brighter future for themselves and their community.

Life in Korail Slum is not easy: Attending school is a daily challenge, as resources are limited and financial constraints block access to proper education. Yet, Tanzina and Farzana face each day with courage, showing that hope and determination can thrive even in the harshest conditions.

Alingan Foundation is committed to supporting children like Tanzina and Farzana. Jannat is not just another child of Korail; she is a symbol of courage, hope, and unshakable dreams. Despite living in one of the toughest environments, she carries within her a dream that lights up even the darkest corners of her life-to one day become a doctor.

A Childhood of Struggles

Life has not been kind to Jannat. With her father gone, her mother is left to shoulder the unbearable weight of keeping the family afloat. Every day brings new financial worries—sometimes even a single meal is uncertain. Education, for many in her situation, would be a luxury.

But Jannat refuses to let go of her dream. She sits in her small, dimly lit room, books spread out in front of her, fighting sleep, hunger, and the noise of a crowded slum—believing that her studies are her only way out.
