What is life like for a child growing up in a Dhaka slum while carrying dreams far bigger than his circumstances?

For many children, the narrow, crowded lanes of Korail Slum are simply where life happens. But for young Rafi, this environment is the backdrop to a journey of quiet determination, everyday responsibilities, and enduring hope.

Rafi’s story is not simply about where he lives; it is about how a child continues to imagine a better future despite the uncertainty surrounding him.

A Boy, a Dream, and a Place to Learn

Rafi is a school-going boy who also attends coaching at Alingan Foundation. Like many children in vulnerable communities, he is trying to navigate a world where formal education requires extra support to truly take root.

But Rafi’s life outside the classroom carries a unique weight.

His parents divorced after his birth, and his father has not been involved in caring for him since then. In the absence of parental support, Rafi has grown up under the wing of his grandparents.

They want him to grow up as a good, responsible person, and they continue to support his education and dreams as much as they possibly can. Their home may not offer financial security or certainty about tomorrow, but it provides something invaluable: care, encouragement, and a family determined to stand beside him.

Facing Hardships, Holding Onto Hope

As Rafi grows older, his grandparents are also aging, making it increasingly difficult for them to maintain a sufficient income. Compounding these financial worries, Rafi’s grandfather is living with a serious liver problem, adding a heavy burden to a family already struggling to manage everyday life.

For Rafi, however, education remains inextricably linked to hope.

He dreams of becoming successful in the future and wants to build a better life for himself. His journey reminds us that children growing up in these environments need more than just classrooms. They need family support, safe environments, regular opportunities to learn, and people who believe in their potential.

Looking Beyond the Surroundings

Life in a Dhaka slum can be difficult to understand from a distance. Stories like Rafi’s allow us to look beyond the physical surroundings and see the child himself—the student, the grandson, the dreamer, and the young person trying to move forward.

His difficult circumstances do not define the limits of his dreams. Instead, his story serves as a powerful reminder of why education, dignity, compassion, and consistent community support matter so much for children facing hardship.
