Lamia Akter – A Dream That Refuses to Fade

Support Posted on Fri, June 05, 2026 08:32:51

Alingan Foundation is committed to supporting underprivileged children in Bangladesh by helping them access education, dignity, and opportunity. Through storytelling and sponsorship, we aim to ensure that no child’s future is defined by poverty alone. Every child we meet carries a unique story of struggle and strength. Lamia Akter is one of them.

Lamia lives in Matir Rasta, Korail Slum in Dhaka, one of the most densely populated urban slum areas in Bangladesh. Born on 5 April 2013, she should be spending her days learning in school, playing with friends, and enjoying her childhood. Instead, her reality is shaped by financial hardship and uncertainty.

Her father, Md Amir Hossain, works as a labourer, earning approximately 12,000 BDT per month (≈ 110 USD / ≈ 100 EUR). This small income is the only financial support for the entire family. Her mother remains at home, caring for her younger son, Saddam, who is struggling with emotional and abandonment-related challenges. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, he cannot access proper medical or psychological treatment.

Like many families in slum communities, survival is the first priority. Every day is spent managing essential needs-food, rent, utilities, and healthcare. In this situation, education becomes difficult to sustain. Lamia’s schooling has been paused, not because she lacks ability or interest, but because the family simply cannot afford the costs associated with continuing her education.

Despite these hardships, Lamia’s spirit remains bright. She is a creative and expressive child who finds joy in drawing and dancing. These activities are more than hobbies-they are her way of expressing emotions, dreams, and thoughts that she cannot always say out loud. In her drawings and movements, there is a quiet strength that reflects her inner resilience.

Her dream is to become a doctor. She wants to care for people, heal the sick, and bring relief to those who suffer. This dream is deeply personal. Growing up in an environment where illness, stress, and hardship are common, she has developed a strong sense of empathy and purpose. For Lamia, becoming a doctor represents hope-not just for herself, but for others around her.

Her father believes education is the only path forward. Even with limited income, he holds onto the hope that Lamia will return to school, complete her studies, and build a better future. He dreams of giving his children opportunities he never had, despite the daily challenges they face.

Lamia’s story reflects the reality of thousands of children in urban slums-children who are intelligent, creative, and full of potential, yet held back by poverty. Still, her story is not only about struggle; it is also about endurance, love, and the belief that change is possible.

With the right support, Lamia can return to school, continue her education, and take steady steps toward her dream of becoming a doctor. Her journey is still unfolding, and every act of support can help shape a better chapter in her life.

Ratna’s Dream to Become a Doctor

A Real Story of Education, Poverty, and Hope in Korail Slum

In the heart of Korail slum, Dhaka, where survival is a daily struggle, lives a young girl named Ratna. Surrounded by poverty, limited resources, and uncertainty, Ratna carries a dream that refuses to disappear.

She wants to become a doctor-not for fame or money, but to serve people.

This is her real story.

Life Inside Korail Slum: A Daily Battle

Korail is one of the largest slums in Bangladesh. Families here face constant challenges:

  • No reliable gas for cooking
  • Unsafe drinking water
  • Poor roads and sanitation
  • Irregular electricity
  • Extremely limited income

Ratna’s family survives on her father’s income as a security guard and her brother’s job as a cleaner. Despite their hard work, the income is not enough to support education for all children in the family.

Because of financial hardship:

  • Ratna’s elder brothers had to stop studying and start working
  • Her sisters were married off early
  • Education became a privilege, not a right

Yet Ratna continues to study.

Education: Ratna’s Only Way Forward

Ratna is currently studying in Class 6. She attends coaching at Alingan Foundation, where she receives educational support, care, and encouragement.

Her parents deeply want her to succeed-but their means are limited.

“We want Ratna to study and fulfill her dream,” her mother says.
“But without support, it may not be possible.”

This is the reality for thousands of underprivileged children in Bangladesh-talent and dreams trapped by poverty.
