Slum Family: Poverty, Illness, and the Fight for Education

Support Posted on Thu, July 09, 2026 11:41:57
A rickshaw puller's family in Karail Slum striving to overcome poverty and illness while keeping their children's dream of education alive.

Behind the crowded lanes of Karail Slum, thousands of families wake up every morning hoping that today will be a little better than yesterday. Among them is the family of Yasin, whose story reflects the daily reality faced by many low-income families in one of Dhaka’s largest informal settlements.

Yasin lives with his parents in Karail Slum. His mother works as a domestic helper in different households, while his father earns a living by driving a rickshaw. Although both parents work tirelessly, their income is barely enough to cover food, rent, and other basic necessities.

The family’s situation became even more difficult when Yasin’s father developed a serious heart condition. Doctors recommended treatment, but the cost is beyond what the family can afford. Despite his illness, he continues to pull a rickshaw because stopping work would leave the family without a stable source of income.

Every day brings difficult choices. Should the little money they earn be spent on medicine, food, rent, or their children’s education? These impossible decisions are part of everyday life for many families living in poverty.

Yet, even in these circumstances, Yasin’s parents continue to believe that education is the path toward a better future. They dream of seeing their children complete their studies and build a life filled with opportunities they never had themselves.

This story is not simply about poverty. It is about resilience, dignity, responsibility, and the determination of a family that refuses to give up despite overwhelming challenges. It reminds us that behind every statistic about urban poverty is a real family with hopes, dreams, and aspirations.

At Alingan Foundation, we believe every child deserves access to education, every family deserves dignity, and every human story deserves to be heard. Through our educational and humanitarian work in Karail Slum, we strive to support vulnerable families and inspire positive change within the community.

Sadiya’s Fight for a Better Future

In the heart of Dhaka’s Korail slum, where narrow alleys wind between tin-roofed homes and daily life is shaped by scarcity, lives a young girl named Sanjida Siddik Sadiya. A 7th-grade student with a quiet determination, Sadiya dreams of a future far beyond the boundaries of her surroundings.

Her family came to Dhaka from Brahmanbaria about two decades ago, seeking stability and opportunity. Today, they live in a cramped room, sharing basic facilities with neighboring families. Her father, a cleaner, is the sole breadwinner. Despite long hours and low wages, he remains committed to one goal: keeping Sadiya in school.

Life in Korail is not easy. Water, gas, and electricity are often in short supply. Yet amid these challenges, Sadiya’s spirit remains unshaken. She attends school regularly, studies hard, and holds onto her dream of building a better life-not just for herself, but for her family.

Sadiya’s story is not just about poverty; it’s about perseverance. It’s about a family that believes in the power of education, and a girl who refuses to let hardship define her future.

This story is part of a documentary by Alingan Foundation, which highlights the resilience and courage of underprivileged families across Dhaka.

💛 Let’s stand together for education, dignity, and hope.
